Key ingredients for green bean casserole
- I think fresh green beans make the fine green bean dish. I don’t like green beans that are canned because they get too soft.
- Frozen green beans will work in a pinch, but they are less crunchy. If you can’t get fresh beans, you can use frozen green beans that have been thawed.
- We don’t buy mushroom soup in a can; instead, we make our own rich sauce with Gruyère cheese, butter, milk, and a lot of mushrooms. Like the cheese sauce used for mac and cheese, the base of the sauce is like that.
- It’s simple to make and tastes much better than canned!
- Instead of Gruyère, use another melty cheese like white cheddar cheese if you can’t find it or think it’s too expensive.
- You could also use white cheese. For a green bean dish without meat.
- Try our recipe for crispy shallots or your favorite store-bought crispy onions, like French’s, for the crunchy finish.
- I think it’s a must. People who have never made crispy onions before should get ready to eat a lot of them!
- They taste so good. We love this simple green bean salad with crispy onions too.

This green bean casserole sauce tastes great because it has a pound of mushrooms, garlic, and onions in it. You can use a food processor to quickly chop the mushrooms into small pieces instead of cutting them by hand. Our sauce is extra rich because we added milk and cheese to it. Even though we love Gruyère, a mild to medium-sharp white cheddar also works well.
