Key ingredients for meatballs
- Most people use ground beef to make meatballs, but I like to use ground chicken, turkey, or pork instead.
- That’s not all. Like we did with these Swedish meatballs and this meatball soup, you can mix different kinds of meat. You can use any ground meat for our meatball recipe below.
- We mix egg, milk, and bread crumbs (or crushed saltine crackers, like we did with this meatloaf) to make meatballs that are soft and juicy.
- Then we add Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, garlic, salt, and pepper to make it taste even better.
How to cook meatballs
- Use a pan to cook them. They stay juicy and turn golden brown this way, which is my fineway to cook them.
- Put them in the oven. This is a great way to make cleanup simple . Use foil, parchment paper, or a plastic baking mat to line your baking sheet.
- This will make cleanup go faster.
- Cook them in a sauce. The meatballs lose their crispy outside when you cook them this way.
- Still, the sauce will make them taste better and make them soft and tender. They will also stay wet.
Use a skillet for golden brown & juicy meatballs
Cook the meatballs on the stove in a pan until they are done and the outside is almost crunchy. This way of cooking lets you turn them over in oil, which gives the outside a nice golden crust while keeping the inside juicy and soft.
- Before adding the meatballs, make sure the pan is hot so that the meatballs don’t stick to it.
- Use a little oil to grease the pan. I use a pan with a heavy bottom and two tablespoons of oil.
- On medium heat, cook the meatballs all over.
Bake meatballs for simple cleanup
- Put silicone baking mats or parchment paper on a baking sheet before you put the meatballs on it to bake.
- Warm the oven up to 425 °F. On the baking sheet, put the meatballs. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until they are browned and done in the middle.
- The meatballs will still be juicy and soft after baking because they have breadcrumbs, milk, and egg in them.

Using a slow cooker, air fryer, and pressure cooker:
Some of you have asked about how to cook our meatballs in a slow cooker, air fryer, or pressure cooker since we shared our recipe. Here are some ideas we have:
Slow cooker: Put the meatballs in the sauce and cook them on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours.
Air fryer: Heat the oven to 375°F and cook the meatballs for 12 to 15 minutes, or until they are done.
Pressure cooker: On SAUTE, bring the sauce to a low boil. Set the heat to HIGH and add the meatballs. Let the cooker release its own pressure for 5 minutes, and then release the rest of the air by hand.
